THERMOPOLIS MAN DIES IN VIETNAM ACTION
    Hot Springs County lost its first soldier in the Vietnam War Thursday, when Sgt. William T. McCormick, 22 year-old son of Mrs. Harry McCormick of Thermopolis, was killed in action.
    Funeral services for Sgt. McCormick will be at 2 p.m. Friday, at the Community Federated Church with burial at Monument Hill Cemetery.
    Sgt. McCormick had served 10 months in Vietnam with the Seventh Air Cavalry and was awarded the Bronze Star for valor in action shortly before his death.
    He was born Oct. 28, 1947 in Thermopolis and graduated from Hot Springs County High School in 1966.  He entered the University of Wyoming that fall and continued his college education until 1968 when he enlisted in the Army.
    While attending high school, Sgt. McCormick participated in activities including Student Council, Language Club and four years in the "T" Club of which he served as vice-president.
    He was a member of the National Honor Society, was elected senior class president and attended Boys' State.
  He lettered in football, swimming and track and holds the HSCHS track and field record in high hurdles, low hurdles and high jump.
 
    McCormick was the state champion in both high hurdles and high jump and was nominated "best athlete" during his senior year.
    In 1966, he was awarded the Kiwanis Scholarship, VFW honor pin, the Bausch and Lomb Science Award, and the University of Wyoming honor scholarship.
    He graduated fourteenth out of a class of 107 students.
    Survivors include his mother; three brothers, Jim of San Francisco, Albert of Santa Ana, and Gene of Casper; and three sisters, Mrs. Gary Taylor of Casper, Mrs. Jerry Sutherland of Denver, and Mrs. Charles Hale of Thermopolis.
    Pall bearers for the funeral will be Tom Walsh, Jerry Walsh, Pete Christensen, Dave Haratyk, Rocky Quarles, Larry Ireland, and Chuck Strezsak.
    Ellen Mortimore will sing "The Lord's Prayer" and "Beyond the Sunset."
